Fabric golf driving range in Guangzhou

A practice range for golfers in Guangzhou, China, reduces its impact on the land by using tensile fabric canopies

Mayland Lake Resort is located at the outskirts of Guangzhou, China’s third-largest city (about 120km northwest of Hong Kong), and is surrounded by an 18-hole golf course, freshwater lake, natural forest and world-class resort community. It also has a five-star hotel with several restaurants, ballrooms and conference rooms for business use. In short, a classy venue vying for international attention.
The resort’s clubhouse includes a fitness center and several related sports facilities, including this driving range. In deference to the project’s sensitive setting—the resort masterplan by landscape architect Huang Fei is designed to respect the site’s ecology*—California architect Narendra Patel, principal of Patel Architecture, “reinvented the driving range structure as a landscape pavilion or folly.” Patel’s innovation was to use lightweight and translucent sculptural tensile fabric canopies instead of heavy partitioning walls. Consequently, the upper floor of the two-level driving structure reduces the need for deep foundations or heavy columns or beams. Patel used concrete for the foundation and upper deck, but designed the rest of the structure as an exercise in tensioned fabric and steel. Columns are spaced to allow two driving stations between each of the ground-level support piers. With 30 stations on each level, during high use up to 60 golfers can practice at a time.
The play of light and texture throughout the project is inspired by the surrounding mountains, the lake and the dynamic resort community. At twilight, the entire building transforms when a programmed LED light show kicks in.
*For example, Fei enhanced the existing lake by bringing it further into the project site rather than expanding the developable land into the lake. In addition, Patel incorporated many green design features into the fiber of the golf resort, including energy-efficient lighting and appliances, water-saving plumbing, waste recycling, low-emission paints, natural materials where possible and overall low energy use operation of the facility.

Moore Park Golf Driving Range

he Moore Park Golf Driving Range offers the convenience of being located near the CBD with the added advantage of being encircled by the impressive Centennial Parklands and City Skyline views. The distant hum of traffic and the rhythmic shwack! shwack! shwack! of balls being sent soaring simultaneously into the air can be a wonderfully hypnotic experience.

The driving range is typically used as either a warm up to a game or simply a fun activity within itself. There are three tiers, offering a total of sixty weather protected bays to tee off from. It is open seven days and provides night lighting for evening sessions. You can hire balls, a driver or an iron or bring your own clubs. Markers of 50, 100 and 200 meters are located as a guide and there are some round black nets that look like mini trampolines as fun targets to aim for.

It feels oddly humiliating missing a shot entirely or hearing the dreaded schlopp of the rubber tee being struck and watching the ball plop onto the faux grass at your feet instead of watching it elegantly sweep across the range. Persistence is the key. You are given a generous amount of balls to play with so you will inevitably hit a winner - therefore restoring your dignity in no time.

Every golfer knows the incomparable exhilaration of hitting a triumphant shot. This is one of the allures that draw them back like a magnet. Swinging a club may look physically undemanding yet you're bound a break a light and significantly satisfying sweat.

Driving Range Golf Practice Drills

Many golfers visit a driving range to work on their swing, but trying to hit a bucket of balls as far as possible by using a driver isn't the best way to improve. Golfers serious about working on their swing mechanics can find a more productive way to spend that time at the driving range. One approach is to use a few simple drills to help focus your practice time.

Baseball Drill

One problem many players have that keeps them from unleashing the full power of their swing is the inability to transfer power from one side of the body to the other during the swing, according to PGA professional Jeff Yurkiewicz. To help remedy this, try the baseball drill at a driving range. Set up a ball on the tee for a normal tee shot. Pick a club you're struggling with and take your standard stance in front of the ball. As you take the club back, pick up your left leg--or right leg if you're hitting left-handed--as if you are a baseball player preparing to swing. Complete the backswing and plant your foot back on the ground as you start your forward swing down and through the ball. Take as many swings in this manner as necessary to feel the proper weight shift. When the movement becomes comfortable, try swinging without lifting your leg but continuing the same transfer of power.

Wedge Drill

Strange as it may seem, a driving range can help a golfer work on his short game. One approach is to take only the wedges in your golf bag and do a simple wedge drill. Divide a bucket of balls into three groups for the three standard wedges in your bag. If you have more or fewer than three wedges, divide the bucket accordingly. Pick a target on the range and start with one wedge. Hit all the balls in that group with the wedge, focusing on getting the ball as close as possible to the target. Take the second wedge and pick a new target, following the same process. Complete the drill by using the third wedge to aim at a third target. By focusing on the variety of clubs, you’ll get a better feel for how to hit each wedge.

Bucket Drill

The bucket that holds range balls can also help refine the golf swing. The bucket drill helps players who struggle with coming down sharply on the ball during the swing. To help widen the swing and follow-through, place the opening of the bucket on your chest and grip the golf club normally. The bucket will prevent you from getting the arms too close together, which often is the reason for a sharp downswing. It also will help keep your swing wide on the backswing and follow-through. Take several practice swings with the bucket on your chest, held in place by your arms, then remove it and hit two or three balls. If you feel your swing turning sharp again, put the bucket back on your chest and take a few more practice swings until you get the right feel for a proper swing.

Driving Range Tee and Preferred Divot Pattern

The Driving Range is a high priority area due to logistics and the amount of use it receives from all classes of memberships, guests and clients. The crew has made improvements to the range tee by increasing the tee size along with a special mist system that waters seeded areas. We developed an irons only area and reshaped the main tee by taking the tier out of upper and lower tees, combining the two areas to increase square footage.
Big is good and we need more square footage for today's needs. It would be nice to increase the tee size two-fold but real estate issues limit us in this aspect. So to accommodate high priority practice days on grass throughout the golfing season, on certain days play is restricted to mats only. As a group the Green Committee has scheduled mat's only on: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Irons only Sunday afternoons. Mats will also be used during periods of inclement weather.

The members have asked how to use the range in regards to divot pattern removal. It is similar to managing a forest. Clear cutting leads to erosion issues, comparable to a golfer taking all of his/her divots in one area. Large patches of seed and soil are moved or misplaced from mowing. Removal of practice divots with rakes or blowers occurs and the areas that are cleared get washed away with rain which leads to a longer recovery period. Leaving strips or clumps of grass, as suggested in the video, will help stabilize the soil and seeded areas from being moved mechanically or washing away. Here is a thought from the Director of Grounds (and MSU Alumni) of The Philadelphia Cricket Club and if his methods are implemented, we hope to see positive results this season. However, the real problem is still not enough square footage and a larger tee would be ideal.

The seven types of people you see at the driving range

I've spent a fair amount of time at driving ranges over the years, even if my ball-striking might suggest otherwise. I'm not talking about the real grass, Titleist-pyramid ranges of private club dreams, but your typical asphalt and Astroturf public ranges where the balls have long been stripped of dimples, the clubs you can borrow are from now-defunct manufacturers, and the characters tend to fall into clearly-defined categories.

1. The middle management executive on his lunch break. He's got his tie tucked into his dress shirt, a fountain soda from Wendy's at his side, and he's got 20 minutes until he's back to the drudgery of conference calls and PowerPoints. Don't talk to him.

2. The Champions Tour hopeful. He gets four large buckets, situates himself in the furthest corner of the range, and works his way methodically through his bag. There's usually an alignment tool involved, maybe even a video camera, and he only breaks to towel off and for his own pre-packed lunch. Don't talk to him, either.

3. The guy who brings his girlfriend. This is usually first- or second-date material, in the idyllic stages of a relationship when he thinks she's actually interested in taking up the game (she's perfect!) and she's impressed by his 185-yard reverse-pivot drives. Flirty help with her alignment is almost always a given.

4. The guy who brings his kids. The wife is at a baby shower, and he's got the rugrats till 3. Why not share with them the game he loves? His plan is to spend the first 10 minutes teaching them proper grip pressure, but loses them after five. Before long, he's busy working on that new baby draw while his kids toy with death playing tag on the range infield.

5. The guys who are solely interested in hitting the range picker. They employ baseball-style grips and hit low screaming hooks at helpless minimum-wage range employees. Bonus points for hitting the truck on the fly, or even better, for forcing him to flee in surrender.

6. The beginner. He's wading slowly into the game unbeknownst to friends and family, and doesn't have the slightest clue what he's doing. He pulls an aluminum Spalding driver from the borrow rack, repeatedly hits the side guard of the stall when catching one off the toe, but gets the most bang for his buck by re-teeing balls he's dribbled seven feet out in front of him.

7. The lurker. He's been there for two hours already, and is only halfway through his first bucket. Usually retired, often wearing black socks, he takes an uncomfortable interest in your game. "Is that a Callaway?" he asks. Especially chatty at the soda machine. "Saw you hit some sweet 8-irons over there," he says creepily.

Golf Driving Range Practice

If you just want to practice your Golf Swing Technique then you do not have to go to a full Golf Course. The Driving Range is ideal for just practicing your Golf Swing without paying any expensive Green Fees. Here are some guidelines on using a Driving Range:
  • Buy Practice Balls. You may either buy balls directly from the Driving Range attendant or from a token machine. For the token machines, you hang your empty bucket on the hook of the machine, insert the tokens, and the machine dispenses the Practice Balls to your bucket.
  • Choose a Stall. The Driving Range is divided into stalls either by metal racks or wood partitions. If there's room, leave an empty stall between you and the next person on the line. This way you can concentrate more on your own Swings without being distracted.
  • Set up your Practice Balls. Very simple Driving Ranges may require you to setup each ball manually. Others may have a golf ball dispenser that will automatically tee up a ball for you on the click of a pedal or button.
  • Many Driving Ranges have artificial grass and have Rubber Tees that enable you to practice your tee shot or any other type of shot. Practicing shots from a bunker or rough lies are not possible on the driving range.
  • When practicing on a natural grass range, give yourself plenty of room because when you take divots from an area, you will have to move a little to find some fresh grass.
  • Practice with all your different Golf Clubs during the first few practices to get an idea of their characteristics and their differences. Then, concentrate on two or three clubs to get the feel of the swings you make with them. This will later help you in deciding what golf clubs are best to use in the golf course.
  • Resist the temptation to just practice your farthest Tee Shot. It might impress those surrounding you but you are there to practice your accuracy and your skills with other Golf Shots as well. Don't be a show off.
  • Realize that a Driving Range can never replace the practice you get from a real Golf Course. As explained many situations that may arise on a real golf course just cannot be emulated on the driving range. So use the driving range to work on your swing technique but spend time on the course as well.

Perfect Practice Makes Perfect!

Mega Driving Ranges

Golfing In The Concrete Jungle

Hi everybody! Wherever golfers are in the world a Driving Range is never far away. And most of us can not resist a visit to hit a bucket of balls. My latest blog looks at 3 of the biggest, each with its own individual feature, read on and enjoy...
Big Business

Not only are Driving Ranges an important tool for golfers in developing their skills, but they are also a multi-million dollar industry. According to the International Golf Practice Facilities Association, American golfers spend over $2 billion per year on range balls! This popularity has led Driving Range operators to strive to make the most out of their available space and resources to create the best possible practice experience for their customers.

Kasai Rinkai Koen Driving Range, Tokyo, Japan
This state of the art “Golfodrome” has over 300 bays and is fully automated. The landing area of the Range is cleverly designed so that the balls run into channels, then fed through pipes under the surface and back to the hitting bays automatically! Even the greens used for target practice are cleared of balls via a robotic arm every ten minutes.

Chelsea Piers Driving Range, Manhattan, New York City
Overlooking the Hudson River, this Driving Range contains four levels of heated hitting bays and an automatic ball-tee-up system. The facility also has an indoor putting/chipping green area and bunker. The coolest feature here is the “Pitch & Putt course designed on the Astro-Turf of the range itself where competitions are held on a regular basis both day and night.

Hanoi Club Driving Range, West Lake, Hanoi, Vietnam
Probably the only time golfer will enjoy hitting balls in a water hazard! This public Driving Range sits on the edge of West lake, Hanoi, and is part of the Hanoi Club Hotel. The range has over 100 bays and is floodlit. Golfers literally hit balls into the lake, however, the balls do not sink to the bottom but float on the surface! The ball are retrieved every evening using a boat and a huge net

Red Bull Creates Psychedelic Driving Range for Fowler with kayneLIVE and 4Wall DC

Washington, D.C. - Event agency New Creatures was recently tasked by Red Bull to provide a “Hero’s Journey” for PGA golfer Rickie Fowler as he trained for the 95th PGA Championship.
This challenge led the unorthodox company to create a ‘psychedelic’ indoor driving range by teaming up with lighting and audio design firm kayneLIVE.  kayneLIVE in turn chose 4Wall DC to provide lighting for the event, which came complete with mysterious creatures, magical islands, and even a talking moon that challenged Fowler’s mastery of golf.
The event was staged at the historic Washington Coliseum, a building that played host to the first Beatles concert in America, yet remains in use today only as a parking garage.
Benji Kayne of kayneLIVE spoke of the choice of venue:
“The Co-Executive Producers / Creative Directors of the event, AJ White and Jason Naumoff, had previously scouted the Coliseum for another event, but couldn’t quite decide on its usefulness.  In taking another look at it, they determined it would be the perfect size for an indoor driving range.”
After deciding upon the concept (one loosely based on Joseph Campbell’s idea of monomyth- a pattern of story involving a hero venturing forth into supernatural wonder), the creative team took to the chore of turning the historic arena into an area of golf wonderment.
In tackling the design, Kayne and LD Ben Carlson considered the venue and its challenges carefully.
“The Washington Coliseum / U-Line Arena presented a unique historical canvas to present out story on with lighting and audio” Kayne said.  “It also presented artistic and logistic challenges.  The Beatles played their first US show there in the Sixties, and it feels like it hasn’t been touched since.”
Kayne utilized concert style moving heads to fill the massive space, while still prioritizing the theatricality of the show.  Different fixtures were chosen to paint each individual element of the arena.
“We used MAC Auras to highlight the architecture of the venue, bringing out the rich patterns in the run-down concrete of the space.  MAC 300 Washes turned the floor into a living ocean, while the VL3000s turned the ceiling into the night sky over a lagoon.”
The team also added Clay Paky Sharpies front and center, giving an added sense of dimension and giving Fowler a bright contrast that served to disorient the golfer- an additional challenge as he faced the journey. ColorBlast LEDs surrounded the entire floor while DF-50 Hazers and Aquafoggers completed the effect of the lagoon.
“Our fixtures needed to all serve three purposes.  One was to highlight the venue itself.  The second was to work with the audio and projection to tell the story of the sea creature, the island, and the taunting moon.  Finally, they needed to make a huge visual impact for our reaction shots, such as a quick flash when Rickie struck the ball or when he hit or missed a target.”
In the end Fowler was able to conquer each challenge presented, sending LED lit golf balls hurtling towards each artificially created bull’s-eye with amazing accuracy.  It would seem both the golfer and the event’s creative team were right on target.

about power tee

Power-up your golfing skills!!

Power Tee is the number one automated ball teeing system for Golf Ranges.

Power Tee is the most productive and enjoyable practice aid a golfer can find in today’s driving range. This is why it is found at the best practice facilities in the world such as St Andrews, the Belfry, Wentworth Club and the superb Dromoland Castle in Ireland in addition to a further 300 quality driving ranges around the UK, and southern Ireland.

For this reason, If you enter a Power Tee driving range you are far more likely to find a quality practice experience than if you use a lesser range. The types of business that invest in your leisure time are more likely to hold quality range balls, a good selection of targets, friendly well managed facility and a comfortable practice and leisure environment. Why settle for less?

If your driving range does not value your custom highly enough to give you the latest and best facilities, why not find a driving range that does?

Driving Range, Restaurants Teed up for Northwest Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City's Planning Commission approves for 61-stall golf driving range that would include two restaurants and alcohol sales.

A yet-to-be named group of local investors has plans to build an upscale golf driving range with at least two restaurants in northwest Oklahoma City near the John Kilpatrick Turnpike. The Oklahoma City Planning Commission on Thursday approved plans for the 61-stall golf driving range that would include two restaurants that would also serve mixed drinks.

Called Skybox, the development would include a 61,618-square-foot, two-story building on a 24-acre golf driving range that would include leasable space for meetings, banquets and other events.

The developer, which is using shell company Origin LLC to pursue its application with the city, declined an interview with The Oklahoma. Oklahoma City attorney Dennis Box, who represented Origin at the Planning Commission, would say only that Origin was "a group of local investors."

The venue would be built on a piece of vacant land on Highland Park Boulevard just off the John Kilpatrick Turnpike that is owned by Oklahoma City real estate investor Tin\\om Blanton, according to property records.
The investment group wants to purchase the land to develop the driving range, Box said.
“We think it's an excellent location,” Box said.

Alcohol concerns
Janis Powers, planning commissioner for Ward 2 expressed initial concerns that giving the development the ability to serve alcoholic beverages might cause problems for the city down the road if the Skybox concept ultimately fails, because a different business would have the grandfathered ability to also serve alcohol.

“This building is 61,618 square feet — that's a lot of alcohol sales,” Powers said.
Nick Gales, planning commissioner for Ward 8, said the building's design would make it difficult to repurpose for a different use should Skybox close.
After a brief discussion, the planning commission unanimously approved plans for the driving range that include the ability for the restaurants to serve alcoholic beverages, but the Oklahoma City Council must still give approval to the project before it can move forward.

Tips for Practicing Golf at a Driving Range

When we get to the driving range and we're going to start tp work on our golf game, there's a couple things you have to remember.

First and most important thing is about quality and versus quantity. It's not about how many golf balls you hit, but it's about quality in which you go about hitting them. So always remember that in terms of when you go to the driving range and get ready to practuce it's better to make 30 golf swings, or 30 foucsed swings, than to stnad up there and just randomly hit.

Second, you want to try and practice with all golf clubs in your bag or different types nad variety of shots that you're going to see out on the glf course. So what does that mean? You're going to hit some wedge shots and you're going to hit some mid-irons, 5 irons, 6 irons, those types of things. And certainly you're going to get into your woods and hit some of those things as well.

Another key component to good quality practice session on the driving range is making sure that you have a specific target in mind. So, when you're hitting golf shots you want to be having a sepicif target, you're not just randomly hitting golf balls thinking that went where you wanted it to, you should have an idea. You're hitting at the blue flag or the red flag or a specific tree in the background, something like that. Make sure you have a specific target.

The  common thing you want to do that all good golfers do is you want to create a proper alignment. When  you're going to practice shots on the driving range you're going to work on your swing and always going to take extra club. Sometimes, people will buy certain sticks or alignment tools, those work well also.

Rory Mcilory hits muni driving range

Equipped with a stand bag and a pair of shorts, Rory McIlroy worked on his game alongside hackers like you and me at a muni driving range in Miami last week.
Rory McIlroy, who was bumped from No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking to No. 2 after a win by Tiger Woods earlier today at Bay Hill, was photographed on Friday hitting golf balls at the Miami Municipal Golf Course.

McIlroy was in Miami to watch girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki compete in the Sony Open tennis tournament.

It's not really news -- one of the world's top golfers working on his game. But, it's pretty cool that McIlroy decided to pound some rocks at an every man's kinda place. Especially when you consider that McIlroy could probably roll up to any posh country club in the world and head to the range, no questions asked.

Here's to hoping McIlroy didn't get -- or take -- any unsolicited advice from an onlooker, as so often happens on a muni driving range.

Swing Driving Range

The Swing Driving Range is Western Australia’s premier golf driving range. The fully automated driving range houses 80 bays on two levels and caters for right and left handed golfers. Each bay is designed to deliver an individual ball to your tee as well as controlling the tee height using sophisticated touch screen technology.

Bookings are not required for the Swing Driving Range and hire clubs are available.

Among my favorites:

How to Choose a Golf Driver

Instructions

Step 1

For beginning and intermediate golfers, find a driver with a big head, which means a club with a larger-than-average sweet spot. A larger sweet spot means that a perfect shot is not required to hit the ball long and deep into the fairway.
Step 2
For more experienced golfers, consider your playing needs. You may not need as large a club head to get the most out of you drive, but you can't go wrong with a bigger head.

Step 3
Look at the loft on the driver. In the past, the club was almost always flat, with a perpendicular angle to the ground when it was in the address position. Actually, there was a slight loft, under 10 degrees. Today, some drivers have a loft that is a bit more than 10 degrees, and that will help get the ball into the air faster and give the golfer a shade more distance.

Step 4
Evaluate your swing. A golfer who has a hard swing should be able to generate plenty of distance with an oversized head. A steel-shafted driver will help that golfer keep the ball straight.
Step 5
For smaller and less-experienced golfers, choose a graphite shaft. You may have a more difficult time generating distance, and a graphite shaft will be whippier and help you get more distance off the tee. However, a graphite shaft will not provide the same degree of accuracy.

Step 6
Go to a driving range to find out which club best suits your game. Tell the local pro you are about to purchase a driver and that you want to try out the different types and models. While he may not give you brand-new drivers to swing, he will let you hit with used ones to give you more of an idea about what suits your game.

Step 7
Go with the driver that feels the most comfortable when you swing it. You may like the way the oversized graphite club looks in the rack, but it may feel uncomfortable when you swing it. On the other hand, the steel-shafted club may not look impressive, but it could feel great on impact. Go with the one that feels the best.

Tips & Warning:
Look for a club that suits your game. If you are a big hitter who gets plenty of distance but may lose accuracy, a steel-shafted club with a big head suits your game. If you need more distance, look for the whippiness that a graphite club provides.

Don't buy the most expensive driver. Buy the one that feels the most comfortable.

How to Practice on the Golf Range

The old saying “practice makes perfect” is sadly not true, practice makes permanent. So before embarking on these tips to help you use your time at the golf range to the best effect, it would be remiss of me not to highlight the importance of taking lessons with one of our highly qualified PGA golf instructors here at The World of Golf. The practice time you spend will bear fruit so much quicker if you are practicing the right things.

Range Practice for Beginners

How to develop your golf without feeling you are getting in everyone's way.
World of Golf is the perfect place to develop your golf. Everyone that starts is understandably shy about their ability; they will tend to hide as far away from any other human being as they can. I always tell my students that nobody cares how well you are hitting the golf ball, because they have got more than enough problems hitting the golf ball themselves. The golf range is a great place to practice in anonymity.

When you arrive, tip the golf balls into the hopper but do not start attacking them just yet. Firstly take a moment to assess your surroundings. All the bays will be aiming towards one of the targets on the golf range outfield, so first of all familiarise yourself with what your target is. When aiming your shots on the golf range you will be influenced by the parallel lines of the mat, the bay boards and in fact the whole range building, so rather than trying to aim across those parallel lines, go with them.

Warm Up Exercises for the Range

How to stretch and warm up before you make any swings or shots.

When people play fast moving athletic sports they would have a warm up to prevent injury, but because golf is not perceived by the average player as an athletic sport they presume the same preparation is not necessary. This is not true, as you are using all your muscles at high speed in a twisting motion when swinging a golf club and the same care should be taken to warm up.

Place a club behind your shoulder blades, preferably a long iron or wood. Then make gentle 90 degree rotations to the left and to the right. The action of placing the shaft across your shoulder blades will cause your spine to be very straight and thus turning your shoulders a lot easier.

Take two clubs, ideally a 6 and a 7 iron, hold them together and gently swing backwards and forwards gradually increasing momentum. You will not be able to grip the clubs normally, but just hold onto them. The process of swinging the extra weight of 2 clubs will make the feeling of swinging one club very light and easy.

Which Clubs Should You Use?
Which clubs should you start with and why you should avoid the driver. Most people make the mistake of starting their practice session by hitting the driver, justifying this choice by saying that on a course, the first shot you play is the driver, this is a very bad idea. Start your range session with some very gentle little chipping shots, follow this with a few pitch shots, then go from the shorter irons to the longer irons, thengen to the driver, and then go home.
An example is the warm up routine that tennis players use at Wimbledon - they start by tapping the ball across the net to each other going through volleys and smashes and then serves, gradually moving from the gentle shots to the most powerful.

“Only Perfect Practice Makes Perfect”

Regular Players
How to practice effectively and focus your drills and control.
Little but often is a good motto for using the golf range. I know time is short for all of us these days but practice is better in small chunks.Try to come to the golf range twice a week and hit a medium bucket of balls, rather than cramming your practice by hitting hundreds of balls in one session.

Have a pre-shot routine that you go through when you play and try to hit every shot on the golf range using this routine. It may require you to approach the ball from behind each time, do so, make each shot on the range a valuable exercise rather than just hitting as many as possible and feeling justified in your work, remember it is quality not quantity that will make your practice worthwhile.

If you are working on specific drills that your World of Golf PGA professional has given you, then take time out between hitting balls to practice those drills, this will reinforce the feeling of the changes that you are working on and will make the improvement occur quicker.

Practice your distance control on the golf range. It is imperative that you know what distance you hit each of the clubs in your bag and use the distance targets on the golf range to do this. Select the specific club required to hit to the yardage markers on the range outfield and take note of the distance you reach with the very well struck shots, not the miss hits. Remember when you play it is far more frequent that you will be hitting 7,8,9 and wedges to greens so hit more shots with these crucial clubs. Also when you are hitting at a green with a short iron you would expect to hit the target more often than if you were attacking with a 3,4 or 5 iron, so practice to get that precision.

Write down what those distances are for each of your clubs, they are a personal thing and then when you are on the golf course and you have a specific distance to the green, your practice at World of Golf will allow you to select the correct club for the shot required.

How to Use Your Bucket of Balls.
How to split the use of your range balls to make your practice more effective.
We suggest that you split your bucket of range balls you have up the following way:
  • Short Game 50% of the bucket of balls
  • Mid to Long Irons 25% of the bucket of balls
  • Drives 25% of the bucket of balls
This will give you the lion’s share of the practice on the area of your game that will lower your score fastest, and yet still give you the enjoyment of hitting a lot of long drives.

Practice as if you Were Playing

How to use your range practice to improve your performance on the golf course.

If you are a member of a golf club, or play the same course a great deal, a very fun way to practice is to play 18 holes of that course on the range. Visualise the shot from the first tee, select the club you would if you were actually playing there. Play the shot and then assess from how the ball flew where you would have finished and the again visualise the shot you would have remaining and again choose the club required for that and play the shot again. Continue this process, including chipping or pitching to the green if your approach would have missed the putting surface, and then move onto the next hole and repeat the process. This is a really good way to help you score better on your own course and to allay worries about particular holes, as you will undoubtedly play them better in your imagination on the golf range than you may have previously done in reality.

Short Game Practice
How to use the driving range for short game practice

The most satisfying thing for most of us about golf is the sight and feel of a well struck drive, but whether you are Master Phil Mickelson or a brand new golfer, over 66% of your total shots in a round of golf are from 50 yards and in. The World of Golf ranges at Sidcup and Glasgow have two of the best short game practice facilities that you will ever find, please do check these out, you will lower your scores guaranteed by investing in practicing this area of your game at our facilities.

You should try to spend 33% of your practice time on the short game, the chipping, pitching, bunker shots and of course putting. As with the long game it is important that you are practicing the right thing, so please do book a short game and or putting lesson with one of our highly qualified PGA professionals and see how quickly your scores will lower.
